The Chemistry Behind the Tianjin Explosions On Wednesday 12th August a series of explosions rocked the Port of Tianjin, killing 114 people and injuring some 700 more. The second of these explosions, the most powerful one was estimated to be the equivalent of 21 tons of TNT, and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale.
The exact cause of the explosions is still be investigated, but it it believed to been caused by a series of separate reactions involving chemicals stored at the port. For full details of the chemistry behind the massive explosions click here. |
